چکیده

Barrett’s oesophagus (BO) is an acquired pre-malignant condition in which metaplastic columnar epithelium replaces the normal squamous mucosa as a consequence of chronic gastro-oesophageal reflux. The pre-malignant quality of BO is demonstrated in untreated adults with BO which are at risk of Barrett-associated adenoacarcinoma (BAA). This review addresses the epidemiological, clinical, endoscopic and histological features of paediatric BO. Recent molecular developments and future directions that might lead to a better understanding of this condition are also

New developments in the endoscopic surveillance of Barrett's oesophagus.

Patients with a Barrett's oesophagus are at risk for developing an adenocarcinoma of the distal oesophagus. Therefore, many patients undergo endoscopic surveillance to detect dysplasia and/or cancer at an early and curable stage. However, early neoplastic lesions are difficult to identify with standard endoscopy. In addition, the low incidence of these lesions, currently estimated at 0.5% per y...

Barrett's oesophagus: diagnosis and management.

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and its sequela, Barrett's oesophagus, are the major recognized risk factors for oesophageal adenocarcinoma, a tumour whose frequency has increased dramatically in Western countries over the past few decades. Barrett's oesophagus develops through the process of metaplasia in which one adult cell type replaces another. The metaplastic, intestinal-type cells of B...

Evaluation of the magnitude of gastro-oesophageal reflux in Barrett's oesophagus.

A manometric study to determine the role of gastro-oesophageal reflux in Barrett's oesophagus was performed on 20 patients with Barrett's oesophagus and 53 patients with reflux oesophagitis without Barrett's oesophagus (25 with mild oesophagitis and 28 with severe oesophagitis). For the same reason, the 20 patients with Barrett's oesophagus also underwent 24 hour continuous oesophageal pH monit...

Influence of Life Style Factors on Barrett's Oesophagus

Background. Since the incidence of adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus is rising, the prognosis is poor, and surveillance programs are expensive and mostly cost ineffective, there is a need to increase the knowledge of risk factors in Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal cancer in order to be able to give attention to medical prevention and/or surveillance programs. Aim. To study if there is a cor...
